The Marlin Fire-Arms Company introduced the model 1889 during that year, replacing the model 1888, and produced it for a total of 11 years ending in 1899. This redisigned version of the model 1888 featured an improved solid top frame and side ejection and became the forerunner of all Marlin lever action firearms to follow. The model 1889 was manufactured in four calibers, a variety of barrel lengths ranging from 20" through 32" in length at 2" intervals, as well as three basic variations consisting of carbines, rifles and muskets. A total of 55,072 firearms were manufactured in this model with the 44-40 caliber not only being the largest of the four calibers but also being the most popular. A fine example of Marlin's capability to introduce cutting edge improvements to the firearms industry.
