     Savage Arms Company introduced the model 1921 repeating shotgun in 1920 as a direct competitor with the Winchester model 1912 shotgun. The Savage model 1921 features a pistol grip walnut butt stock, ringed walnut forearm and has a takedown lever on the end of the magazine tube assembly. In 1927, Savage made an improved version of this shotgun which also featured checkering and called it their model 1928. The model 1921 was discontinued the following year to make room for the improved model 1928.
