Winchester Model 52 Sporting & Target Rifles w/ serial # 1 thru circa 38,000 & manufactured from 1919 thru circa 1937

Winchester introduced the model 52 bolt action rimfire rifle in 1919 as a high quality target rifle featuring a 28" target barrel, flat top receiver and target style stock with a finger grooved forearm section. This rifle was offered in 22 Short (1919-1922) and in 22 LR caliber from 1919 til the end of production. Winchester changed the design of their triggers circa serial #23000 and introduced the then new "Speed Lock" trigger which is identified by the visible coil spring behind the trigger. Many production changes occured to their target stocks over the years. One such change to their target stocks was the removal of the finger groove which went into effect around serial #24000 (circa 1932). The factory also made a change in the receivers profile from flat top to round top around serial #33000 (circa 1936). At this same point in time the barrel bands were changed from external variations to internal variations. Very few Sporting models were manufactured prior to 1936. These Sporting models featured a 24" barrel, capped and checkered sporting style stocks with shotgun butt plates and ebony forearm tips. The Sporting rifle stocks could be had with or without a cheek rest.
