Remington Arms Company introduced the model 514 bolt action single shot rimfire rifle in 1948 and manufactured approximately 780,000 rifles during its 23 year production run. When first introduced, it was offered in only one variation having a 24" barrel, standard sights and a pistol grip walnut stock. In 1951, the Routledge / smoothbore variation was offered but it was not a popular seller as only 5,557 rifles were made in this configuration. In 1952 the rifle was available in a peep sight variation and in 1961 a Boy's rifle was offered featuring a shorter barrel and stock length.
