This antique Marlin manufactured walnut forearm is for the Ballard single shot rifle that was made until 1891. Marlin manufactured about 40,000 Ballard rifles. This forearm is serial numbered 34395 and was likely manufactured sometime during the late 1880's or very early 1890's. The forearm measures 8 3/16" long including the teat extension at the rear that protrudes into the receiver. This forearm has a slight snabel tip and is designed for an octagon barrel that measures 3/4" across. The overall condition is very good with many scattered dings, a 1" horizontal crack on the upper left side of the forward tip and a very shallow chip missing along the upper left side edge about 1" back from the tip. This forearm is likely for the sporting or gallery style rifles.
