This Winchester Repeating Arms Co. manufactured two piece, split top, cardboard box with green top label and side sealing band contains all 50 rounds of 22 Short ammunition with copper cases and is in very good to near excellent condition with light wear and soiling. The side sealing band has been broken open on the front and both sides, but the back remains sealed. The buff paper wrapping is peeled up on one of the bottom corners of the box (see last photo). The top label displays No. 22 with the short "N", "RIFLE CARTRIDGES", the trademark statement "TRADEMARK. REGD. IN U.S.A." around the H logo, and "STETSON'S / PATENT / OCT. 31. 1871". The green side sealing band displays ".22 CAL. SHORT, 1/2 / TARGET CARTRIDGES. / WINCHESTER MAKE." on the front and a disclaimer and the company name on the back. Both ends state ".22 CAL. / SHORT, 1/2". The copper casings display the "H-10" headstamp and a moderate coating of tarnishing.

Date of Manufacture: This style box was produced circa late 1890's or early 1900's.

Note: This box is similar to the Huegel # WRA-5 S-1(a) variation. The difference observed is that the front of the box reads ".22 CAL. SHORT, 1/2 / TARGET CARTRIDGES. / WINCHESTER MAKE.".

This box is cataloged in Richard Rains's book Winchester Two-Piece .22 Boxes 1873 To 1927 as WRA-40 S-12(b). This box displays a 5/8" wide side sealing band with side styles 3 and 5 and end style 2 on both ends.
