History: The J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company introduced circa 1894 an improved version of their already manufactured small frame single shot rifle which was then and still is referred to as their small frame side plate rimfire rifle. This improved rifle was an instant success and quickly out sold all other rimfire rifles manufactured in its day. This improved model became known throughout the entire world as the "Favorite" and was produced in four rimfire calibers. The calibers were 22 LR, 22 WRF (least common), 25 Stevens and 32 Long. The rifle was offered with a variety of additional options such as smooth bore barrels and a host of different types of sights for both the front and rear sections of the barrel as well as a tang mounted folding peep sight. Throughout its production run, the rifle experienced a wide variety of changes or improvements to nearly all of its parts (larger and small parts) which would not have been noticed by the casual observer or shooter but to the experienced gunsmith, it became a small nightmare. We here at CFN Parts have poured through many reference books on the subject of this rifle and have found multiple contradictions between different authors, and more importantly when we compare their findings with unmolested examples that we have on hand, as to the time frame when each of these changes took place and so we are going to take our own stab at it and try and help you make an informed decision on what changes were made on the Favorite and the order in which they were made. We will show you the chronology of the Favorite rifle based primarily upon its frame (aka receiver) and the improvements the frame underwent over time as the parts which were used in each specific frame were changed or improved upon but we will not make any assertation as to what year each frame or part came into existence. The parts listed below will indicate as many variations as we are currently aware of for the Favorite (except for the side plate model and the model 1915 which will be listed elsewhere on our website).
